Spanish low-cost airline Iberojet has launched a groundbreaking service, initiating direct flights between Madrid and Bangkok, thereby establishing the first-ever direct air link between Spain and Thailand.
The inaugural Flight E9845 took off from Madrid at 21:45 local time on May 30 and touched down at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport at 15:15 the following day. Onboard were 360 passengers, including 25 executives from Ávoris Corporation and its subsidiaries, alongside members of the Spanish press and influential figures from social media.
Operated as a subsidiary of Ávoris Corporation, Iberojet plans to run one weekly flight on the Madrid-Bangkok route from May to December 2024, utilising the spacious Airbus A350-900 aircraft with 432 seats.
For travellers eyeing this route, one-way fares start at £250, while return fares begin at £495, as per information available on the airline’s website.
The current schedule for Iberojet is as follows:
Flight E9845 departs Madrid at 21:45 on Thursdays and arrives in Bangkok at 15:15 the following day.
Flight E9846 departs Bangkok at 19:15 on Fridays and arrives in Madrid at 03:15 the following day.
Upon arrival in Bangkok, Thailand’s tourism authorities warmly welcomed the guests from Madrid with a reception held at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Sermsak Pongpanit, Minister of Tourism and Sports, expressed his enthusiasm for Iberojet’s nonstop service, emphasising the convenience it brings for Spanish travellers visiting Thailand. He highlighted the recent adjustment in visa exemptions, extending the stay duration for Spanish passport holders from 30 to 60 days, making it an ideal time for Spanish tourists to explore Thailand.
This visa revision aligns with Thailand’s broader strategy to enhance travel accessibility and stimulate economic growth through tourism.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) views the launch of direct flights on the Madrid-Bangkok route by Iberojet Airlines as a significant boon for Spanish and Southern European tourists planning trips to Thailand. Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool expressed optimism, noting the potential to attract both first-time and repeat visitors from these regions, particularly during the peak travel months of July and August.
Spanish tourists, known for their preference for online booking, favour destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Samui. Their interests range from savouring Thai cuisine to exploring historical sites, indulging in beach activities, spa treatments, and snorkelling adventures.
In 2023, Thailand witnessed a surge in Spanish tourist arrivals, totalling 153,458—an impressive 74.64% increase from the previous year. Moreover, the early months of 2024 saw approximately 56,160 Spanish tourists visiting Thailand, reflecting a notable 43.31% rise compared to the same period in 2023, as reported by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.
