Thailand’s northeast is preparing for one of its biggest international events of the year, as Udon Thani turns a vast wetland into a showcase of gardens, agricultural innovation and sustainable living.
From November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027, Udon Thani will welcome visitors to the International Horticultural Expo 2026, a 134-day celebration of plants, people and the environment.
Staged at Nong Dae Wetland in Kut Sa, just outside Udon Thani city, the expo is recognised by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and takes place under the theme “Diversity of Life: Connecting People, Water and Plants for Sustainable Living.”
The setting is central to the concept. Rather than treating the site simply as a backdrop for ornamental gardens, organisers are building the event around Nong Dae’s wetland environment and the relationship between water, plants and communities. The official Expo website describes it as the world’s first horticultural expo held on a wetland.
Visitors can expect considerably more than flower displays. Plans divide the Expo into six main zones, encompassing international and organisational gardens, greenhouse displays and plant competitions, agricultural innovation, Thai agricultural knowledge and a carbon-credit forest designed around ecosystem restoration.
Technology will have a place alongside horticulture. An agricultural innovation area is set to explore indoor farming, economic crops and modern farming technology, including drones, while the wider Expo will address issues ranging from biodiversity and food security to climate change, urban farming and the circular economy.
The northeast will also make its presence felt. An Esan Village will recreate examples of traditional regional architecture and provide a setting for art and cultural performances. Even the main greenhouse draws inspiration from the huan faet, or traditional Isan twin house, bringing local architectural identity into the Expo’s contemporary design.

For travellers, the event provides another reason to look beyond Thailand’s established tourism centres and head northeast. The Expo site is around 15 minutes from Udon Thani International Airport and Udon Thani Railway Station, according to organisers, making it possible to use the city as a base for a visit.
And the Expo need not be the end of the journey.
Udon Thani is the only province in Thailand with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, giving visitors the chance to pair the horticultural showcase with two very different chapters of the region’s past. Ban Chiang reveals a prehistoric settlement and farming culture through its archaeological remains and distinctive pottery, while Phu Phrabat, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2024, combines unusual sandstone formations with prehistoric rock art and sacred Sīma stones associated with the Dvaravati period. Together, they turn a visit to the Expo into a wider journey through Udon Thani’s landscape, culture and history.
The Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo 2026 runs from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027, at Nong Dae Wetland, Udon Thani.
