There will be jazz, swing dancing, popcorn and cotton candy. Visitors can attempt to stay aboard a mechanical rodeo bull, test their knowledge of American trivia or watch a Hollywood classic. For three days in October, a corner of central Bangkok will offer a distinctly American experience, without the long-haul flight.
From October 23 to 25, the U.S. Embassy in Thailand will bring its American Fair to Siam Paragon, marking the final stop of a travelling celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary. The event, held at Parc Paragon and SCBX Next Tech, follows earlier appearances in Hat Yai, Nakhon Ratchasima and Chiang Mai.
Admission is free, and the programme offers an eclectic mix of entertainment, cultural exchange and American nostalgia.

Music provides much of the atmosphere. The Carolina Jazz Ensemble will perform alongside musicians from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and Mahidol University, while Fino the Ranad will bring the bright, percussive sound of Thailand’s traditional xylophone into the mix. Performances by Hard Rock Cafe musicians, Yamaha Music School students and American diplomats will add to the variety.
Visitors who prefer to participate rather than watch can try swing dancing, with a workshop and performance by Jelly Roll Jazz Club recalling the dance halls of an earlier American era.
Elsewhere, the mood turns towards the county fair. A mechanical rodeo bull offers a test of balance and nerve, while an apple-balancing game, a rooster-crowing contest and American trivia provide less conventional diversions. Celebrity chef Ian will lead a cooking challenge, and free popcorn and cotton candy will be available.
There is also a Statue of Liberty-shaped 3D ice cream, created especially for the occasion and available for purchase.

At SCBX Next Tech, the emphasis shifts from nostalgia to innovation. NASA’s Your Name in Landsat activity allows visitors to spell out their names using satellite imagery, while discussions with business and technology leaders explore contemporary American enterprise.
Families can visit face-painting stations, pose for photographs transformed into collectible trading cards or explore exhibitions presented by American organisations and their Thai partners. Those feeling particularly energetic can join a fitness session led by U.S. Marines.
A film programme offers another window into American popular culture, with screenings ranging from Grease and Back to the Future to Toy Story, Independence Day and Saving Private Ryan.

Beyond the fairground attractions, the event also serves a diplomatic purpose. The United States and Thailand have maintained formal relations since 1833, making Thailand one of America’s oldest diplomatic partners in Asia.
For Ambassador Sean K. O’Neill, the anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate that relationship with Thai visitors and Americans living in Thailand.
For everyone else, it is a chance to spend an afternoon moving between jazz, satellite imagery and rodeo rides — an unlikely combination, perhaps, but one that captures something of the country’s cultural variety.
