In celebration of His Majesty the King’s 72nd birthday on 28th July 2024, the Fine Arts Department is offering free entry to the National Museum of Royal Barges. This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Thailand’s rich cultural heritage, with an exhibition dedicated to the history and craftsmanship of these magnificent vessels.
The museum showcases the exceptional skills of Thai artisans, including master woodcarvers, lacquer artists, mirror inlayers, carpenters, and painters. Highlights include the Krut Hern Het, Krut Tret Trai Jak, Ekachai Hern How, and Ekachai Lav Thong barges, which can be seen floating elegantly along the Bangkok Noi Canal.
For a more immersive experience, visitors are invited to observe the preparation of these barges for the Royal Barge Procession rehearsals on selected dates: 22 August, 3, 12, 19, 26 September, and 1 and 10 October 2024. Full dress rehearsals are scheduled for 15 and 22 October, starting at 12pm.
The Thailand Royal Barge Procession is a rare and awe-inspiring event that beautifully showcases the nation’s rich royal heritage. With over 50 intricately designed barges, each exemplifying the finest of Thai craftsmanship, the procession glides majestically along the Chao Phraya River, offering a captivating display of cultural and historical significance. Steeped in tradition, this grand spectacle provides a unique insight into Thailand’s past and is a must-see for anyone visiting the country.
